Allenby parade & inv. [i.e., investiture]

Here for your enjoyment is an absorbing photograph of Allenby parade and investiture. It was created in 1917 by the Photography Department of the American Colony Jerusalem.

The photo illustrates Jerusalem in World War I. Allenby commanded the cavalry division of the British Expeditionary Force. In 1917 he took command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. His reputation resulted from his operations in the Middle East. During his campaign against the Turks in Palestine he liberated Gaza in November and Jerusalem in December 1917 and, after beating the enemy on the plain of Megiddo in September 1918, captured Damascus and Aleppo. He was High Commissioner to Egypt from 1919-25.

We have compiled this collection of photographs mainly to serve as a valuable educational resource. Contact curator@old-picture.com.
